Petite Modeling - Not As Petite As You Might Think

What is a petite model, really? When most people think of the word 'petite' they're probably thinking of a tiny thing, maybe 5 foot nothing, the kind of person you could pick up with one hand and slip into your pocket.
Well, 'petite' in the modeling agency Singapore is quite different, due to the fact that an 'average' model is over 6 foot tall. Petite models are usually 5'2" to 5'7".
In the past, there wasn't much demand for petite models, and in a not unrelated fashion, people whose body shape varied from the manufacturer's 'norm' found it difficult to buy clothes in their size. There is plenty of anecdotal evidence to say that small people were driven to shopping in the children's departments of large fashion stores - and many of the larger labels were completely unavailable to them.
But times are changing, and in today's society, it's all about catering to every individual. Everything can be customised, from your phone cover to your TV channel, and clothing is not being left behind. Not only is the range of sizes available increasing, but each size is often now available in different varieties, including 'petite'.
The manufacturers need someone to model these new sizes, in order to promote them, make more sales and expand the sector.
So there is more demand than ever for petite models, but don't let that fool you into thinking it'll be easy to get work as a petite model. If anything, it's harder to break into than regular modelling as there is more competition.
If you'd like to break into petite modeling, it's a good idea to start researching which modeling agencies there are in your area that take on smaller models. These may be larger agencies that have a petite department, or they may be specialist petite modelling agencies.
Whichever, they'll require you to send in a couple of pictures - usually a headshot and a full length, but check their guidelines for submissions and make sure you follow them closely, otherwise you'll be shooting yourself in the foot.
Be honest about your stats when you send them in - if you're lucky enough to be invited in for an interview, they will weight and measure you - and you'll have to take your shoes off!
Don't be disheartened if you don't find success right away - it's a very competitive business and most people get rejected to begin with.
